Last Goodbye – © 1972

This is a short poem about an old man and his wife saying “Goodbye” for the last time.

He said, “goodbye”. He dried her tears
And held her hand to calm her fears.
T’was nothing more that he could say
For only once you pass this way.
“I love you still”, the words spilled fast
He knew his time had come at last.
She closed her eyes to fight the tears.
He closed his eyes, the cost of years.
