Boxing Day

Another custom I was introduced to here, was Boxing Day. A day that has nothing to do with the sport of boxing.

Once a year, the congregation would bring presents for the Pastor. As a youth I mistakenly thought the name had to do with the fact that the put all the presents in a big cardboard box at the church. Most of the “presents” were food.

I remember one year he even got a chair! Now THAT was a special year.

Little did I realize that Boxing was “invented” to help provide some help for the poor or lower class citizens of the community. I think my Dad made $65/month preaching back then. He always had to get jobs on the side to make ends meet.
